Prayer


Looking south

God of the grey sea
God of the mourning wind
God of the bleak northern sky
Give me your fire to warm my cold thoughts
Your light to bear in the face of fear
Your warmth to hold close to my trembling
Your companionship on the lonely path
And at the end the brightness of the open door
And the joy of a long-awaited greeting.

Amen.

Chris, thank you for this piece. It is so liturgical in feel, but for a liturgy spoken or sung in your church on a cold and windy winter evening or at the time and place of your accompanying photograph.

I am going to read it to Jane. Both of us are a bit blue after today's funeral, and this piece shows how words that acknowledge loneliness and loss can be more (and more deeply) comforting than something light and bubbly that “heals my people’s wounds lightly.”

Walter, I'm glad you found this helpful. I used a form of it at the end of Intercessions at the Eucharist this morning, and your comment encouraged me to do so. I think it was a good thing to do.
